The Opportunity:
I’m currently working with an established water infrastructure and civil engineering business looking to recruit an experienced Site Supervisor to support its growing workload across Somerset and the surrounding areas.
This is an opportunity for someone with a solid background in groundworks, drainage or civil engineering who can confidently oversee multiple sites, coordinate subcontractors and ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
You’ll take ownership of day-to-day site operations, working closely with the wider project team to keep works on programme, maintain quality and control costs. While the position is primarily supervisory, a practical, hands-on approach is important, including the ability to operate plant when required to keep work moving.
The business is looking for someone who can bring consistency to site delivery, take pride in their work and become a trusted point of contact for subcontractors and project colleagues.
The Role – Your responsibilities will include:
Site Supervision & Health and Safety
- Oversee site activities across several live groundworks and civil engineering projects.
- Ensure safe systems of work are followed in accordance with company procedures and CDM 2015 requirements.
- Review subcontractor RAMS and deliver site inductions, toolbox talks and daily briefings.
- Carry out site inspections covering excavations, temporary works, plant, permits and general site safety.
- Address unsafe working practices, reporting and investigating incidents or near misses as required.
- Ensure site welfare, security, access arrangements and traffic management are maintained.
Subcontractor Management
- Coordinate subcontractors and their working foremen across multiple sites.
- Check relevant competency cards, plant certification and insurance documentation.
- Monitor workmanship, productivity and general site performance.
- Maintain clear communication with the project team and raise any performance concerns promptly.
Programme & Project Delivery
- Plan and coordinate site activities, labour, materials and plant in line with agreed programmes.
- Monitor progress and identify potential delays before they affect delivery.
- Coordinate deliveries, plant hire, waste removal and external inspections.
- Resolve day-to-day site issues, escalating technical or commercial matters where appropriate.
Quality & Commercial Control
- Ensure works comply with drawings, specifications and relevant construction standards.
- Maintain inspection records, test documentation, photographs and as-built information.
- Identify defects and ensure snagging is completed to the required standard before handover.
- Monitor plant hire, materials and waste to help maintain project budgets.
- Record additional works and variations accurately, checking subcontractor timesheets and applications against work completed.
Site Administration & Equipment
- Maintain accurate site diaries, inspection registers, permit records and progress reports.
- Provide regular updates to the Operations Manager and Project Engineers.
- Represent the business professionally when dealing with clients, residents and other site stakeholders.
- Follow environmental procedures covering waste management, pollution prevention, dust, noise and the protection of watercourses.
- Operate excavators and dumpers when required and drive a company Transit tipper between sites.
- Ensure plant, tools and equipment are inspected, maintained and used safely.
What I’m Looking For:
- Previous experience supervising groundworks or civil engineering projects, including drainage, foundations, earthworks or external works.
- A current SSSTS or SMSTS qualification.
- A valid CSCS card.
- Experience managing subcontractors across multiple sites.
- The ability to read construction drawings and specifications and understand levels and setting out.
- A sound understanding of CDM 2015, excavation safety, temporary works and underground service avoidance.
- A full UK driving licence and the ability to drive a Transit tipper.
- Confidence using email, site reporting applications and basic Microsoft Word and Excel.
Desirables:
- CPCS or NPORS tickets for a 360 excavator and forward-tipping dumper.
- An NVQ Level 3 or above in site supervision.
- NRSWA Supervisor or First Aid at Work qualifications.
- Experience in drainage, sewage treatment or water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Trailer-towing entitlement (B+E).
The Package:
- Salary of £32,000 – £45,000, depending on experience.
- Company vehicle (Transit tipper) and fuel card.
- Eligibility for an annual performance-related bonus.
- Employer pension contributions and life cover.
- Paid health and wellbeing support.
- 22 days’ annual leave plus eight bank holidays.
- Company closure over Christmas.
- Flexible holiday-trading options.
- Company mobile phone, PPE and workwear.
- Paid training and renewal of relevant qualifications and tickets.
- Monday-to-Friday working pattern.
