If you’re looking to work in construction, you’ve likely come across the term CSCS card. While it’s not legally required, more and more contractors are tightening their internal compliance processes. That means not having a card could block you from getting on site, even if you’ve got the right experience.

What is a CSCS Card

A Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card is proof that you’ve completed health and safety training and, in some cases, earned a trade qualification. It’s a way for sites to check that everyone on site understands basic safety rules and is competent in their role.

Many companies are now updating their internal skills matrices and making CSCS cards a preferred requirement, especially for labourers and entry level roles.

How to Get a CSCS Card

1. Find the right card for your role

2. Pass the Health Safety and Environment (HS&E) Test

A 45-minute multiple choice test with 50 questions. It checks your understanding of working safely on site.

3. Meet any role-specific requirements

• For a Green Labourer Card you’ll need a Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification
• For a Skilled Worker Card (Blue) you’ll need an NVQ Level 2
• Red Cards are available for those currently in training or apprenticeships

Booking the CITB Test

Book online or call 0344 994 4488. Have your National Insurance number or a CITB/CSCS registration number ready. Tests are available at centres across the UK and accessibility support is available if needed.

How Much Does It Cost

• CSCS Card: £30
• CITB Test: £19.50. Most cards last for five years before renewal is needed.

Which Card Should You Apply For

• Blue – Skilled Worker
• Red – Trainee, Apprentice or Experienced Worker
• Gold – Supervisor or Advanced Craft
• Black – Manager
• White – Academic or Professional routes
